Enigma: A Literary Fable

If you had the opportunity to speak to Christ today, what would you say to Him? Fyodor Dostoevsky, in his novel The Brosthers Karamazov, Book 5, Chapter 5, known as "The Grand Inquisitor," wrote in 1879 of such an encounter in sixteenth-century Spain.  In Enigma: A Literary Fable,Wynant Vanderpoel, at the risk of criticism for playing off one of Dostoevsky's masterpieces, presents an informal and, at times, humerous twenty-first-century version.  The central character, Thomas Clarkson, wrestles with spirituality throughout his life, framed and influenced by events on the global stage from World War II to the Iraq War and by the knowledge known in 1879.  In The Brothers Karamazov, a Catholic cardinal shars his thoughts while speaking to Christ in a Seville dungeon. Clarkson's encounter with Christ takes place at a small church in the sleepy fictitious hamlet of Dixville Crossing in the heart of New York State's Adirondack Mountains.
